Indo-Bangla jt exercise in Sylhet begins Sunday

New Delhi, Oct 8 (newsbz24) – The special forces of Bangladesh and Indian armed forces will launch a joint exercise in Sylhet on Sunday.

An Indian Air Force plane with 25 soldiers of Indian Army landed at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet on Saturday.

About 40 soldiers of the Indian Army's elite units are likely to take part in the joint exercise, which will end on Oct 22. Bangladesh Army would deploy one of its para-commando units for exercise.

Indian Army officials in New Delhi said the exercise was the second of a series called Operation Sampriti, aimed at strengthening military-to-military ties between the two countries and enhancing professional expertise of the two armies.

The first phase of Operation Sampriti was held at Jorhat in north-eastern Indian state of Assam from Nov 1-4, 2010.

Military ties between Bangladesh and India received a boost when Indian Army chief General V K Singh visited Dhaka last June.

Gzb don killing in film, three cops want credit(india)

Director of 'Zilla Ghaziabad' gets calls from three UP cops claiming that they killed Mahender Fauji; they want a mention in his film

Director Anand Kumar is as baffled as he is amused by certain calls that he has been getting from in and around Ghaziabad these days. Kumar, who has earlier made films like "Delhii Heights" and "Jugaad", is currently working on a gangster-flick titled "Zilla Ghaziabad". The film, which stars Vivek Oberoi, Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi, is apparently inspired by the lives of two of Ghaziabad's most notorious mafia dons - Mahender Fauji and Satbir Gujjar. Arshad Warsi plays Fauji, who was shot dead in an encounter, and in the past couple of days, Kumar has got calls from three UP policemen, all of whom claimed to be the killers of Fauji, and requested the director to feature them in his film!

Kumar told us, "Three different cops have called me and have claimed that they killed Mahender Fauji. They told me that I should mention them in the movie since they have not been mentioned in any historical records. This is bizarre. When we started the movie, we were told that Fauji left behind no family. Now, there are eight-nine people who have called me claiming that they are his family. They all want to get mileage from the movie."

But what's more bizarre for Kumar is the fact that several panchayat heads in Ghaziabad got together on Wednesday to discuss the movie, and have decided to move court against the director and stop him from making the film. But Kumar told us that he is not worried at all, and added, "I'm not making Fauji's jeevni. Zilla Ghaziabad is a notorious place where criminals were born, and that has been explored in the movie, but it's not about the life of one dead person. We have Sanjay Dutt playing the role of a UP cop - Pritam Singh. I am trying to glorify UP cops through the movie when most people in the country would not. I don't understand why people have an objection to that!"
In fact, Kumar insists that his movie is an out-and-out action flick, and says that he recently shot the theme song for it with 400 dancers. He says, "It's a completely commercial movie. For instance, we recently shot this song called "Yeh Hai Zilla Ghaziabad" in Wai with 400 dancers holding guns and swords, choreographed by Ganesh Acharya. It's a masala movie. I'll probably put a disclaimer saying that the story is a work of fiction. Perhaps people will believe me then."

Court sets riders on NRI divorces(india)

NEW DELHI: A trial court has held that a divorce decree granted by a foreign court to an NRI is invalid in case the woman does not have the means to go to that country to plead her case and if she had not subjected herself to the jurisdiction of that court.

"The apex court has opined that where the foreign judgment is in defiance of the Indian Law, it could not be said to be conclusive... in the matter adjudicated and would be unenforceable," in this country," it said, adding the woman's objections raised by the woman fell within the purview of the exceptions of Section 13 Civil Procedure Code (when 'foreign judgment not conclusive'.

The court gave the ruling in a case where a UK-based NRI divorced his wife there though his wife had returned to India and not "submitted to the jurisdiction of a foreign court". The woman has sought divorce here on grounds of cruelty. The court said that the decree of divorce granted by the court could not be recognized.

"The fact that the petitioner has been residing in India since December 2009 and did not have the wherewithal to contest the proceedings on merit in the court in UK not only created an imbalance and an inequitable situation but clearly points out that she had not submitted to the jurisdiction of that court," Additional District judge Ina Malhotra said.

The woman (petitioner) had moved the trial court seeking divorce on the grounds of cruelty. Her husband, however, submitted that their marriage had already been dissolved by a court in UK and had attained finality. Hence, making a application infructuous. Also, since both the parties were a resident of UK, the decree was valid.

Her counsel Prashant Mendiratta argued that since the lady had never subjected herself to the jurisdiction of the UK Court adjudicating on the divorce, the decree passed by the UK Court would not bind the lady. Citing various judgments by Supreme court on the issue, Mendiratta said that in any case the proper law for dissolution of a marriage solemnized by Hindu rites and ceremonies between two Hindus would be the personal law of the parties, which is the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955-an act not applicable in UK.

After going through the contentions of both the parties, the court held that the objections raised by the woman fell within the purview of the exceptions of Section 13 Civil Procedure Code (when foreign judgment not conclusive), rendering the foreign decree a nullity. "I find that apex court has clearly opined that where the foreign judgment is in defiance of the Indian Law, it could not be said to be conclusive in the matter adjudicated and would be unenforceable in this country," it said.

The court also said even the fact that the petitioner (woman) was a resident of UK before and after marriage cannot vest the foreign court with the jurisdiction to adjudicate the matter as she had returned to India for good and not on a fleeting visit "prior to initiation of divorce proceedings" in UK.

BSP sacks 12th MLA in two months(india)

The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party on Saturday suspended another party MLA-Yogesh Verma from Hastinapur, Meerut. The charge against Verma is involvement in criminal activities.
LUCKNOW: The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party on Saturday suspended another party MLA-Yogesh Verma from Hastinapur, Meerut. The charge against Verma is involvement in criminal activities.

With Verma's ouster, the total number of MLAs suspended by the BSP in the past two months has touched 12. BSP leaders described action against Verma as purging of criminals from the BSP by chief minister and party supremo Mayawati.

BSP state president Swami Prasad Maurya in an official statement said that on November 2, 2009, Verma and his aides were named in the murder of a couple Laxmi and Gyanedra Bansal. The complaint also accused Verma of trying to grab Bansal's property. Now, Maurya added, the son of the deceased couple Nikunj has lodged a complaint with the police accusing Verma and his brother Rajan of trying to kill him. "When police initiated action against Verma, the latter started issuing irresponsible statements against BSP and its leaders, hence the party has decided to suspended him and deny him a ticket for the 2012 assembly elections," he said.

Other BSP leaders suspended or expelled on charges of indiscipline and anti-party activities in the past two months include Malik Masood, two times MLA from Sagri, Azamgarh, and chairperson UP Udyog Bandhu; Awadh Pal Singh Yadav, MLA from Aliganj and former minister of state for dairy development and animal husbandry; Dasrath Prasad Chauhan, MLA from Haisar Bazar, Sant Kabir Nagar; Ashok Kumar Singh Chandel, MLA from Hamirpur Sadar, Hamirpur; Fareed Mehfooz Kidwai, MLA from Masauli, Barabanki; Sher Bahadur Singh, MLA from Ambedkar Nagar; Satish Varma, MLA from Hardoi; Guddu Pandit, MLA from Dibai, Bulandshahr; Yogendra Sagar, MLA from Bilsi, Budaun; Haji Yakoob Qureshi, MLA from Meerut city, Meerut; Jitendra Singh Babloo, MLA from Bikapur, Faizabad and Jaunpur MP Dhananjai Singh.

Jobs' innovation, and passion for a life's work

Editor's note: Michael Graves is the founder of Michael Graves & Associates & Michael Graves Design Group. He is credited with broadening the role of the architect in society and raising public interest in good design as essential to the quality of everyday life. Among his awards, he has received the 1999 National Medal of Arts, the 2001 Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects, and the 2010 Topaz Medallion from the AIA and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, in recognition of his 39-year teaching career at Princeton University.

(Newsbz24) -- For most designers, good design is neither just a well-functioning object nor a good-looking object, but rather both. I say both, as the simultaneity is crucial so that function and appearance support each other and, when done well, in a sense become indistinguishable.

In designing products, we consider these two attributes -- along with other factors such as budget, material capability and consumer response -- and add them to the mixture that constitutes design. What Steve Jobs did was to add yet another element: innovative marketing. Have you ever been in an Apple Store that isn't packed with people "just browsing?" They are there to soak up whatever Apple is and does. Who would ever have thought that bulky, wooden Parsons tables would be enough?

But you can bet on one thing: Jobs did not go to market research groups to find the answer. He knew that all each store would need, beyond its terrific merchandise, were bare essentials. Think about it: He didn't need flashing neon, he didn't need hip tunes blaring so that you couldn't hear each other, he didn't need wild colors or expensive materials. He simply needed a clean space with a sales force of people, each wearing an Apple T-shirt.

I gasp whenever I see, in a newspaper or magazine, a new restaurant where the designer has opted for outrage in his or her need to be the next cutting-edge idea, forgetting that the customer might just want a good place to eat with friends. I imagine that Jobs would not have had a hand in that type of scenario. He might simply have said, "It's not that difficult. After all, it's just about dinner."

Share your memories of Steve Jobs

Designers often neglect the essence of innovation when they are overwhelmed with the requirements of the product they are designing. The Apple Store design, the product design, the hardware design and software design all come down to innovation -- something not tried before.

I am reminded of an apocryphal story about Pablo Picasso. Two frumpy ladies were standing in front of a cubist portrait of Gertrude Stein, or at least the label said "Gertrude Stein." One woman turned to her friend and said, "It doesn't look like Gertrude Stein." Whereupon Picasso, who happened to be standing behind them, said in a prophetic tone, "It will."

In a commencement address to Stanford University graduates that's been widely televised since his death, Jobs revealed something about himself that I, too, have felt intensely since I suffered paralysis. Of course, being aware that his illness would limit his time, he said that he wanted every day to be spent making a contribution.

One imagines that Jobs, given how much he loved doing what he did, wanted to leave this world exhausted from his passion for his life's work, for that's all that would give him rest.

Legendary pianist Roger Williams dies after battle with cancer

(Newsbz24) -- Award-winning pianist Roger Williams, who played before nine U.S. presidents and recorded dozens of albums over his long career, died early Saturday in Los Angeles after a struggle with pancreatic cancer, his assistant said. He was 87.

Jacque Heebner, Williams' personal assistant who said she had known the musician for 77 years, said she was with him inside his home when he died. Even into his final weeks, Williams continued to perform and to champion such causes as music education. He had recently released an album and was under contract for three more, she said.

"There was never a man with a more tender, gentle heart," Heebner said. "He was a charming man, even at the age of 87."

Born Louis Weertz in Omaha, Nebraska, the pianist attended Drake University and the Juilliard School in New York City. He then met Dave Kapp, the founder of Kapp Records, who suggested the musician change his name to Roger Williams, according to a biography on the Hit Parade Hall of Fame website.

His break came in 1955 with his recording of "Autumn Leaves," going on to have hits on the Billboard charts for four decades, according to his official website. His records include "Born Free" and themes from the movies "Doctor Zhivago" and "Somewhere in Time."

Williams' success helped land him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a 2011 induction into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame and many other honors. He was also a workhorse performer, including long stints headlining shows in Las Vegas in which he played his characteristic blend of originals, classics and works from greats like Duke Ellington and more contemporary composers.

Former first lady Nancy Reagan noted in a statement Saturday that Williams played for nine presidential administrations, including her husband's. She said Ronald Reagan and the pianist "met as young men, each just getting started, and had been friends for decades."

"Roger kept in touch long after we left in Washington," Nancy Reagan said, noting he performed "many times at the Reagan Library."

"Roger was a great pianist, a great American and a great friend," she said.

According to Heebner, Williams played and practiced eight hours a day. She said he continued to do so into his final days, adding that his cancer didn't affect his sunny demeanor or sharp mind.

"His oncologist (recently) said his sickness hadn't done anything to his his intelligence, his quick wit and his charm," Heebner said. "He was an amazing person."

Man ditches plane into ocean off coast of Hawaii after running out of gas

Newsbz24) A 65-year-old man flying from California to Hawaii was forced to ditch his plane in the Pacific Ocean on Friday night 13 miles off the coast of Hilo after running out of gas, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The man was flying for delivery a Cessna 310 twin-engine aircraft from Monterey, California, to Hilo when he radioed federal aviation authorities that he was 500 miles out and low on fuel, said Petty Officer 3rd Class Angela Henderson, a spokeswoman for the Coast Guard.

He estimated he would run out of fuel 100 miles short of the island, according to a Coast Guard statement.

The Coast Guard deployed rescue crews aboard a C-130 Hercules and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter to intercept the pilot and escort his plane with the hope of coaching him to a safe landing, said Coast Guard Lt. Gene Maestas. A Coast Guard ship was also at the scene.

The plane didn't make it, running out of fuel as the pilot had predicted.

"The pilot ditched his airplane at approximately 5:23 p.m. and climbed out of the cockpit onto the wing," the Coast Guard said in a statement.

Video released Saturday by the Coast Guard shows the small aircraft skimming along the water before coming to a stop. It eventually settles and floats in the water, seemingly intact and with its nose pointed in the opposite direction from which it came.

A man is then shown being pulled from the water toward the helicopter.

After being rescued, the pilot was transported to Hilo Medical Center for evaluation, Henderson said.

"He was reported to be coherent with no significant injuries," the statement said.

American King Air Services, an airplane ferry service, said on its website Saturday that the pilot had "successfully ditched." It said that he is "in good condition," and that the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.

The plane was registered to the Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, company. Neither American King Air nor the Coast Guard immediately released the pilot's identity.

"We are waiting right now to hear from the Coast Guard about the aircraft," Pablo Bassabe, a company vice president, told CNN.

Hilo is about 2,300 miles west of Monterey, where the pilot's flight began.

According to the aviation site Airliners.net, Cessna 310 aircraft have a range between 760 to 1955 miles, depending on various factors including cruising altitude, weight, amount of reserve fuel and the specific model.

Obama chides banks, taps anger over Wall Street

WASHINGTON, Oct 08 - President Barack Obama launched an onslaught against banks and Republicans on Thursday for working to block financial reform, using a populist tone amid public anger over Wall Street practices.

Obama, a Democrat who is fighting for re-election in 2012 against a backdrop of high unemployment, said his Republican opponents' primary plan to boost the economy involved rolling back Wall Street regulation his administration fought to pass.

The president also pressed Congress to approve his $447 billion jobs package and said he was "comfortable with" a proposal by fellow Democrats to pay for the plan with a tax on millionaires. John Boehner, the Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, accused Obama of political campaigning.

Obama spoke at a White House news conference after thousands of anti-Wall Street demonstrators protested at New York's financial district and in several US cities this week over economic inequality and financial institutions' power.

"I think people are frustrated and ... the protesters are giving voice to a more broad-based frustration about how our financial system works," Obama said.

"What we've seen over the last year is not only did the financial sector with the Republican Party and Congress fight us every inch of the way, but now you've got these same folks suggesting that we should roll back all those reforms and go back to the way it was before the crisis."

Obama noted the "Dodd-Frank" financial reform bill he championed was designed to prevent Wall Street abuses, and his emphasis on the subject indicated he would use the theme heavily in the 2012 presidential race.

Banks, he said, "can't be competing on the basis of hidden fees, deceptive practices or, you know, derivative cocktails that nobody understands and that exposed the entire economy to enormous risks."

Vice President Joe Biden and a US Federal Reserve official also expressed sympathy for the protesters, but some investors said Obama's populist tone was misplaced.

"If these statements were coming from a lowly congressman, that's one thing, but this is the president. It's class warfare at its finest, or at its worst," said Marshall Front, chairman of Front Barnett & Associates, which has $600 million in assets and owns bank stocks.

POPULISM AND POLITICS

Bank of America said last week it planned to charge customers who use debit cards to make purchases a $5 monthly fee. Obama said recent hikes in fees charged by banks were likely unfair to consumers. He said it was appropriate for the government to play an oversight role.

The depth of that oversight is as much a political issue as it is a financial one.

"You've got Republican presidential candidates whose main economic policy proposals is, 'We'll get rid of the financial reforms that are designed to prevent the abuses that got us into this mess in the first place,'" Obama said.

"That does not make sense to the American people. They are frustrated by it, and they will continue to be frustrated by it until they get a sense that everybody's playing by the same set of rules."

House Speaker Boehner said Obama had "given up on the country" to focus on his re-election rather than working with Republicans to boost the economy.

"Mr. President, why have you given up on the country and decided to campaign full time instead of doing what the American people sent us all here to do?" Boehner said.

Though criticizing Wall Street can tap into populist support, it could hurt Obama's campaign pocketbook. Like other presidential candidates, Obama is courting Wall Street contributions for his political goals.

Obama already has a tenuous relationship with some in the financial community for his harsh rhetoric about corporate compensation at the beginning of his term.

"It is pretty clear that the Obama 2012 campaign is going to try to take up the theme of economic populism -- how they (Obama and Biden) are the only ones standing in the way of the banks and corporations taking over Washington," said Paul Sracic, a political scientist at Youngstown State University in Ohio.

New York City protests over income inequality have spread to other US cities. They were underway or planned on Thursday in Austin, Texas; Tampa, Florida; Washington, and Houston.

"We have a very frustrated people, and I can understand their frustration," Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher told a group of business people in Fort Worth, Texas.

"We have a very uneven distribution of income. We have too many people out of work for too long.

JOBS SALES PITCH

During his White House news conference, which lasted more than an hour, Obama continued a sales pitch for his jobs package, saying it was necessary to avoid another recession.

Republicans say the proposal -- a mix of stimulus spending and tax cuts for workers and small businesses plus an end to some tax breaks for corporations and the rich -- will never pass as a whole but that certain parts are worth considering.

Some Democratic lawmakers are also not fans of the bill. In response, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he would substitute a new millionaire's tax for some of the tax hikes Obama had proposed in order to win more support.

Nevertheless, Republicans are still expected to block the measure in the Democratic-controlled Senate and it faces stiff opposition in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

Delhi blast probe spreads to Bangladesh

New Delhi Correspondent

New Delhi, Oct 8 —The investigations into the Sept 7 blast at the entrance to a court in Indian capital New Delhi has spread to Bangladesh, with tacit cooperation between the counterterrorism agencies of the two countries leading to the arrest of a key suspect in the case.

The arrest also once again brought under focus the terror networks of the extremist organization Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami and Hizbul Mujahideen across the sub-continent.

Indian government officials, however, did not disclose if the purported disappearance and interrogation of four Kashmiri students from a medical college in Sylhet were also linked to the probe into the Delhi High Court blast.

After a Kashmiri student of a medical college in Bangladesh was arrested by India's National Investigation Agency in connection with the blast, his father claimed that he himself had asked his son to return to India and handed the latter over to the investigators at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi soon after his arrival from Dhaka.

The NIA produced Wasim Akram Malik to a court in Delhi on Friday and he was remanded to agency's custody until Oct 21. Wasim is the son of a government official based in Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir and he was studying in a medical college in Bangladesh.

Wasim's parents, however, said that an incarcerated Hizbul Mujahideen militant, whom they got arrested for kidnapping their other son Junaid in 2010, set police after their family after the blast in front of Delhi High Court. Jammu and Kashmir police, however, described Junaid, who is yet to be traced, as a militant of the Hizbul Mujahideen.

The blast at the entrance to the Delhi court killed at least 15 and left many others injured.

Kishtwar came under the focus after investigations revealed that an email purportedly circulated by HuJI among media organisations to claim responsibility for the blast had in fact been sent from the town in Jammu and Kashmir.

Wasim was the third Kashmiri to be arrested in connection with blast. Earlier, two youths, Aamir Abbas and Abid Hussain, were arrested in Kishtwar.

Wasim's father Riaz ul Hassan Malik, an employee of India's state-owned National Hydroelectric Power Corporation, told journalists that he had received a letter from police in Kishtwar informing him that the NIA wanted to question his son in connection with the Delhi High Court blast.

"I made arrangements so that the NIA officials can talk to my son Wasim, who was in Bangladesh, over telephone. He readily agreed to cooperate with the investigation and I asked him to return. I received him at the airport in Delhi and then handed him over to the NIA officials," said Riaz ul Hassan Malik, who had in November 2010 lodged a complaint with the Jammu and Kashmir police that his youngest son Junaid had been kidnapped by Hizbul Mujahideen militants.

Police action on the basis of his complaint had led to the unearthing of a recruitment module of the terrorist networks and three Hizbul Mujahideen operatives, including one Azhar Ali, had been arrested. Police, however, could not trace Junaid.

The NIA purportedly started suspecting Wasim's role in the Delhi High Court blast after they questioned incarcerated Azhar Ali in a jail in Kashmir.

Wasim's family claimed that he had been in Kishtwar on the day of the blast at Delhi High Court and had not only withdrawn money from bank ATMs but also shopped in the malls, where he might have been caught on CCTV.

"My son is innocent and he had nothing to do with the blast in Delhi," said his mother Shamima Begum, who is a headmistress of a government school in Kishtwar.

Wasim, who had been in Kishtwar on Eid vacation, had gone back to Bangladesh on Sept 9, just two days after the blast.

Due to tacit cooperation between the security agencies of Bangladesh and India earlier in 2009 and 2010, a number of top leaders of insurgent organisations active in northeastern Indian states of Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya and Manipur had landed in the custody of the law-enforcing agencies of India.

In his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Sept 24, Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh had upheld the security cooperation between his country and Bangladesh as an example.

"In South Asia, there are encouraging signs of cooperation in the area of security, as exemplified in India's growing cooperation with Bangladesh. Such cooperation is adding to the security of both our countries," he had said.
