With Verma's ouster, the total number of MLAs suspended by the BSP in the past two months has touched 12. BSP leaders described action against Verma as purging of criminals from the BSP by chief minister and party supremo Mayawati.

BSP state president Swami Prasad Maurya in an official statement said that on November 2, 2009, Verma and his aides were named in the murder of a couple Laxmi and Gyanedra Bansal. The complaint also accused Verma of trying to grab Bansal's property. Now, Maurya added, the son of the deceased couple Nikunj has lodged a complaint with the police accusing Verma and his brother Rajan of trying to kill him.
