Govt nods proposal to tax ministers

Dhaka, Nov 17 —The cabinet has cleared proposals to tax salaries of ministers and state ministers, who will have to pay income tax once they are passed by parliament.

The approval came from a cabinet meeting on Thursday chaired by prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her press secretary Abul Kalam Azad told reporters.

Prime minister Hasina had announced in the last budget session of parliament that ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers's salaries will be taxed.

The latest nod was a step towards the implementation of that announcement.

Azad said the proposals were about amendments to The Prime Minister (Remuneration and Privileges) Act-1975 and The Ministers, Ministers of State, Deputy Ministers (Remuneration and Privileges) Act-1973.

He said ministers discussed 14
agendas, including a proposal to amend the Money Laundering Act.

According to the proposal, Azad said, money launderers will be given four to 12 years in jail. Their possessions will be confiscated and they will be fined Tk 2 million or double the confiscated properties, he added.

Those who will give false information or statement as a witness will be sentenced to at least three years in jail.

The cabinet also cleared the draft of the amendment of the National Export Trophy Policy 2006. The C category firms in the export-processing zones will get nomination for the national trophy once the draft gets the final nod.

The deals to form a joint economic commission with Myanmar and waiver of visa for diplomatic and official passport holders with Cambodia were also cleared.

The council of ministers ratified a deal to avoid double taxation with Mauritius and returned proposals to amend Bangladesh (Freedom Fighters) Welfare Trust (Amendment) Act, 2011 and to organise a programme to honour foreigners and country heads who played role in the nation's Liberation War.

Authorities were ordered to present the proposals at a later cabinet meeting, Azad said.

The cabinet was briefed about planning minister A K Khandaker's visit to Turkey, commerce minister Faruk Khan's trip to Japan and state minister for environment Hasan Mahmud's visit to the US and South Africa.
