BNP agitation to shield corrupt, war criminals: PM

Gopalganj, Nov 16 – Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has said the agitation of opposition BNP seeking restoration of the non-party caretaker government system mainly aims to protect the 'identified' war criminals and corrupt people.

"The BNP chairperson is waging movement to protect her two corrupt sons and halt the trial of those responsible for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971. But the countrymen will not respond to them," she said on Wednesday.

She was addressing a public meeting on Sheikh Lutfar Rahman Government College premises at Kotalipara upazila in Gopalganj district.

"When Awami League comes to power, the country is rewarded, but when BNP assumes power, the country is reprimanded."

Hasina, also the president of ruling Awami League, held BNP chief Khaleda Zia responsible for embezzling the fund from the Zia Orphanage Trust.

She also came down hard on late president Ziaur Rahman saying it was Zia who doctored the constitution to stay in power through the Aug 15 and Nov 3 killings.

"The country's apex court has declared his orders illegal after 36 years. Avenues of grabbing the state power through unconstitutional and illegal means have been sealed off forever through the 15th amendment to the constitution," she added.

Police had recovered a 76-kilogramme bomb near Hasina's rally venue at the same playground in Kotalipara on July 22, 2000, just a day prior to one when she was scheduled to address the public rally.

The police investigation revealed that banned Islamist outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B) tried to kill Hasina by exploding the bomb.

Tight security arrangements were made in the area for prime minister's visit on Wednesday.
