Govt to clarify position on Padma Bridge

Dhaka, Oct 14 (bdnews24.com) — The government will clarify its position on the Padma bridge project within a week, says the finance minister.

Abul Maal Abdul Muhith told reporters on Saturday that the government will publicly explain its position very soon.

When asked to specify a time, Muhith replied, "This week, the one beginning Sunday."

The finance minister was speaking at the launch of the 'World Development Report 2012', which is a flagship publication of the World Bank.

Ellen Goldstein, country head of the global lender, also read out a statement on the $3-billion bridge over the Padma River, saying that as part of the lending agency's due diligence, the World Bank has shared information with the Bangladesh government.

The statement read, "The World Bank's independent Integrity Vice Presidency has shared information on the Padma bridge project with the government of Bangladesh, which is part of our due diligence. The World Bank Group works in challenging governance environments while maintaining standards of integrity that allow the most effective use of our resources."

"In Bangladesh, the World Bank is firmly committed to transparency in everything we do to ensure that Bangladeshis get the full development benefits of our support."

The World Bank had pledged to provide $1.2 billion for the bridge but has suspended its funding on charges of corruption and irregularities in the tender process. However, Bangladesh government has so far denied the charges.
